Bull i'th'Thorn

The Bull i’th’Thorn

Situated on the A515 Buxton to Ashbourne road, the Bull i’th’Thorn is just a mile outside of Flagg. This welcoming and locally owned hostelry has more than 500 years of history and memories. It would have once been a welcoming resting place for travellers by horse or stagecoach who travelled along the roman road known as ‘The Street’, which has now been incorporated into the A515.

Today it offers a warm welcome with good food and drink served in an olde world snug bar surrounded by dark wood and gleaming brasses.

Nearly 700 years ago there is a farmhouse recorded alongside the Roman Road. In 1472 it became a hostelry known as ‘The Bull’. In 1654 ‘The Bull’ was renamed ‘Hurdlow House’, after the nearby village, with locals renaming it ‘Hurdlow Thorn’. The current name of ‘The Bull i’th’Thorn’ is an amalgamation of all the titles.

Inside " The Bull i' th' Thorn" Tudor panelling, bearing carvings of 1642 and 1742, and stone flagged floors show
the genuine antiquity of this enchanting old building.

Today ‘The Bull i’th’Thorn’ offers snacks, meals, space for functions and a full bar. Alongside there is space for camping, and a local and rare breeds animal attraction.
